HEY I’M
At the time of my initial ADHD diagnosis at 12, I had no idea how lucky I was to be able to receive a diagnosis so early in life - most women with ADHD don’t receive a diagnosis til their late twenties, thirties or even later in life!
Stimulant medications have been helpful for me but I’ve always suffered from side-effects like loss of appetite, anxiety, muscle tension and insomnia. My experience with these side-effects was so severe that I started to explore alternative ways to manage my ADHD, which was how I became so passionate about nutrition and intuitive eating.
I spent a lot of time learning how to nourish myself consistently with ADHD as a teenager and young adult - this really helped me feel like I was in more control of my ADHD symptoms and life in general.
After completing an undergraduate degree in environmental studies and political science, I eventually decided to go back to school to become a certified nutritionist.
Nutrition school was challenging and fascinating - I loved learning about food science and how to use food to improve our quality of life everyday.
During this time I also began to learn about how much our hormones have an influence on our lives, especially the aspects that are really impacted by ADHD like our energy levels, mood, and the ability to focus.
I began to connect the dots around how understanding exactly where I was in my menstrual cycle impacted my ADHD symptoms, and this gave me better insight into ways I can take care of myself, improve my productivity and work towards achieving my goals.
Throughout this process, I also discovered intuitive eating. Intuitive eating is a practice that allows us to tune into our body’s signals around hunger, fullness and what foods make us feel good so we can make food choices that nourish and satisfy ourselves long-term. It focuses on improving our relationship with food and doing so while rejecting any messaging related to diet culture.
Learning to become an intuitive eater did so many amazing things for my mental and physical health, so I spent most of last year working towards becoming a certified Intuitive Eating counsellor.
When I first began working as a clinical nutritionist, I helped clients make changes in their nutrition, lifestyle, and relationship with food to improve digestion, immunity, hormone health, metabolic conditions, sleep, joint pain and ADHD.
Through working with clients experiencing so many different conditions, it became even more clear to me how our general health impacts ADHD. So many ADHD symptoms can be associated with the health of our digestion, hormones, immune system and of course our brain. From here I developed my unique approach for working with neurodivergent folks around improving their health and nutrition long-term, and doing so while making their relationship with food more secure.
